FAQ

Have Questions? Reach Out Or Look At The FAQ Section.

Starting therapy can bring up many questions, and we're here to help. Our FAQ page covers everything from what to expect in your first session to how we approach treatment. Whether you're curious about session formats, confidentiality, or the types of therapies we offer, you'll find clear and helpful answers to guide you. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out!

  • Why see a therapist if I already have friends or can talk to ChatGPT?

Friends and tools like ChatGPT can be helpful for support or perspective. Therapy is different because the focus is entirely on you and your patterns. A therapist is trained to notice underlying dynamics and guide deeper change. It’s a structured space for growth, not just conversation.

  • I struggle to regulate my emotions in relationships. How would therapy help?

Therapy helps you understand what triggers intense emotional reactions. You’ll learn ways to slow down your responses and communicate your needs more clearly. Over time, this can lead to calmer conversations and fewer repeating conflicts. The goal is to feel more in control of your emotions and more secure in your relationships.

  • Does Soul Tree use AI as part of the therapeutic process?

No- we believe that therapy should be grounded in compassionate human connection from trained professionals. To prioritize your safety and well-being, AI is not used during sessions or as part of the notetaking process.

  • The world feels like it’s falling apart. How can therapy help with that?

Therapy can’t change global events, but it can help you cope with the stress they create. You can learn ways to manage anxiety, set boundaries with news and social media, and stay grounded. Therapy also helps you focus on what’s within your control. The goal is to stay engaged with the world without burning out.

  • I’m already overwhelmed. Won’t therapy just add another thing to my plate?

Therapy is meant to reduce pressure, not add to it. Sessions give you a space to slow down and make sense of what’s weighing on you. Many people find therapy actually frees up mental energy by reducing overthinking and stress. The goal is to make life feel more manageable, not busier.

  • How can therapy help when I feel awful for 1–2 weeks every month because of my cycle?

Some people experience predictable cycles where their mood, energy, or emotions shift dramatically (PMDD, PCOS, PME, menopause). Therapy helps you understand these patterns and prepare for the harder weeks instead of feeling blindsided by them. You’ll learn ways to support yourself, adjust expectations, and reduce the shame or self-criticism that often shows up. Over time, those weeks can feel more manageable and less disruptive.

  • How long are therapy sessions, and how often will we meet?

Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long. However, we also offer 25-minute and 75-minute sessions to suit your needs. The frequency of our meetings will depend on your goals and preferences, which we can discuss during our first session.

  • What credentials do your therapists have?

Both of our clinicians are registered in good standing with their respective regulatory bodies. Janet is a Registered Psychotherapist with the CRPO and holds a Master’s in Counselling Psychology (MACP). Jasmine is a Registered Social Worker with the OCSWSSW and holds a Master’s in Social Work (MSW). In addition to their graduate degrees, lifelong learning and professional development are core values at Soul Tree Therapy. Both clinicians pursue ongoing training in the therapeutic modalities they practice to ensure care remains evidence-based and effective. You can learn more about the specific trainings and certifications each clinician has completed on their individual team profile pages.

  • What types of therapy do you offer?

We offer a range of therapies including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFBT), Narrative Therapy (NT), and trauma-informed approaches. Together, we'll work out what approach feels best for you.

  • Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. We respect your privacy and will not share information without your consent, except in cases of immediate safety concerns or as required by law.

  • What should I do if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?

We understand that life happens! If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please let us know at least 48 hours in advance. This allows us to offer the time to someone else who may need it. Thank you for your understanding!

  • Do you offer in-person therapy sessions?

Yes! Our office is located at 3075 14th Ave #224, Markham, ON L3R 0G9.

  • What can I expect in my first therapy session?

In your first session, we’ll discuss your concerns, goals for therapy, and any background information that’s helpful. It's a chance for you to ask questions and get a feel for how we work together.

  • How can therapy help me stop or reduce a behaviour I keep repeating?

Therapy helps you understand what’s driving the behaviour, not just the behaviour itself. Together we look at triggers, emotional needs, and patterns that keep it going. From there, you can practice new ways of responding that actually work in real life. Change becomes easier when you understand the pattern behind it.

  • Do I have to do homework in therapy?

Sometimes therapists suggest small things to try between sessions, but it’s always optional. This might be noticing a pattern, reflecting on something that happened, or trying a new communication approach. It’s not about adding work to your week. It’s simply a way to help insights turn into real-life change.
