Perimenopause, Mood, and Identity: Supporting Women Through Transition

Perimenopause is often talked about in terms of hot flashes, sleep changes, and shifting hormones. But what about the emotional experience of going through this transition?

Many women find themselves feeling more anxious, overwhelmed, irritable, or unlike themselves during perimenopause. They may notice changes in their mood, confidence, relationships, or ability to cope with everyday stress. These experiences can feel confusing, especially when they aren’t always recognized or talked about.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing explored the impact of individualized counselling for women during perimenopause. The researchers found that supportive, personalized conversations helped women build healthier habits, feel more confident managing their symptoms, and experience greater support during this stage of life.

While this study focused on health counselling rather than psychotherapy specifically, it highlights something important: having a space to talk, reflect, and feel supported can make a real difference.

Psychotherapy can offer women a place to explore the emotional side of perimenopause. It can help with managing anxiety and mood changes, adjusting to shifts in identity, navigating relationship changes, and developing coping strategies that fit their lives.

Perimenopause isn’t just a physical transition. It’s also an emotional and psychological one. Women deserve support that recognizes the full experience of this stage, not just the symptoms that show up on the surface.

The more we talk about perimenopause, the more we can help women feel understood, supported, and empowered to care for their mental health during this important chapter of life.
